Regardless of the binder, care should be taken to maintain stable relative humidity so to prevent weakening of the emulsion. Collodion is more stable than gelatin but is susceptible to image-eliminating abrasion. Gelatin emulsions on glass are known to flake and delaminate due to factors both manageable (environmental) and not (manufacture). As with all glass plates, these slides are delicate and can be severely damaged through cracking and breakage. Gelatin slides are prone to delamination of the image layer. Acidic environments and enclosures spur these forms of oxidative deterioration along. Without glass cover, the slide is at a higher risk of delamination, flaking, fading, yellowing, and silver mirroring. Composition Supportĭeterioration Since most glass slides are protected by a glass cover, they are often in decent condition, despite having the same elemental instability of either a silver gelatin, collodion, or albumen negative on glass. Hand-colored images can be identified by their saturated, unnaturally bold colors, and sometimes selective coloring. Hand-coloring was an additive color method: the manual application of water colors, paints, or aniline dyes to the image surface. Many B&W slides were "color-enhanced," making them appear at first glance to be color slides. ![]() Glass slides may be hand-colored, tinted, or toned. Stereograph slides are rectangular and feature two nearly identical images side-by-side in contrast, lantern slides vary in size but are often nearly square and contain one image. Stereograph slides were given a glass cover only if they were made with an albumen binder. Lantern slides often have a glass cover in addition to its glass support, and they are sealed along the edges with strips of black tape. A glass slide will likely be a positive image, which sets it apart from a glass plate negative. 1960 Image Tone Monochrome (gray-black, warm brown, ocher orange to olive green ) hand-coloring or tinting possible Description A black-and-white glass slide is comprised of a thin glass support with an albumen, collodion, or gelatin binder, and a silver image. It is a durable but shy fish that is also very attractive, and they were first described in the mid-1970s. Ocellated Spiny EelĪlso called the African Spiny Eel, this eel is light-brown or tan in color and has short vertical stripes and blotches that look like a broken line and which can be found on the entire body. In fact, in this species, it is the males that dig burrows to guard the nest of eggs after they are hatched. This type of eel can breathe both under the water and on land, and when they are juveniles, they are known as primary male or primary female fish. It can also be called the Marbled Conger and actually refers to several different types of fish. Mottled CongerĪlso called the Mulatto Conger, the Mottled Conger can grow up to nearly four feet in length and is most often found in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Like many other eels, they feed mostly on crustaceans and small fish. The Longfin African Conger can be found on reef flats and in shallow lagoons on seagrass beds. This eel has two rows of very sharp teeth and is brownish-grey in color, although it also has yellow on and below its fins, a black patch on the pectorals and on parts of its eye, and narrow black edges on its median fins. It lives over 250 feet below the surface of the ocean and can be found in waters near East Africa, the Easter Islands, south of Japan and northern Australia, to name a few. This type of eel is found in the Indo-Pacific area and can get to over four feet in length. The Half-Banded Spiny Eel has a pointy snout and can live up to 15 years. ![]() They prefer bodies of water that have pebbly or sandy bottoms, and they also like dense vegetation. It is a nocturnal animal that is commonly found in Asia, southeastern Thailand, and Indonesia, among other places. It only grows to about eight inches in length, and it has vertical markings that present a more banded look, hence its name.Īlthough it is small, the eel is very hardy and can even be kept as a pet in an aquarium if it is kept with other fish that are too big for it to eat. Though not considered a true type of eel, the Half-Banded Spiny Eel resembles other types of eels with its long, slender body. They come out at night to eat, mostly small fish, and this type of eel is frequently sold either fresh or salted in local food markets. They mostly stick to habitats such as coral reefs and rocky regions, and they can also be called the Antillean Eel. Feeding mostly on finfish, the Grey Conger was first noticed in the mid-1800s, and it is found in the Atlantic Ocean, including areas such as South America, Jamaica, and Cuba. The Grey Conger ranges from three feet to a little over five feet in length and has a head that looks similar to a catfish. Their eyes are emerald green, and over 80% of their body is covered with the elements necessary to electrify an animal.Įlectric Eels grow to around eight feet in length and get up to 45 pounds, and their lifespan is approximately 15 years. The Electric Eel has an elongated and cylindrical body that is a dark-grey color, and it has an orange throat. It is found mostly in the South American region, and their electrical jolts are even harmful enough to paralyze some mammals that are as large as a horse. In fact, it needs to breathe air about 80% of the time in order to stay alive. Like the Lungfish, which also has an elongated body, the Electric Eel needs air to breathe and will rise to the surface of the water every 10 minutes in order to gulp air. It is somewhat of an enigma since the experts still don’t know everything there is to know about them. The one characteristic that sets the Electric Eel apart from other eels is the fact that it can electrify and paralyze its prey, which no other animal can do. ![]() ![]() ![]() DIMENSIONS: Interior DIMENSIONS: 13" Width x 15.75" Length x 10" Height Exterior DIMENSIONS: 13.75" Width x 16.75" Length x 13" Height. Folk singer Pete Seeger got a hold of it and started working on an English version. That whole evolution started with Linda’s Mbube.Īround 1948, the South African record company sent a copy to Decca Records in the US, hoping to get it distributed there. Township jive became a whole movement, nurturing famous exponents as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, known for their contribution on Paul Simon’s Graceland album. Japan and China are the last two countries who rely on kanji for literacy. While Chinese characters are still taught in schools in Korea, their use is highly debated as many think they should be abandoned altogether. Since one must be educated in order to learn how to pronounce Han characters (汉字), many people thought it was a way to keep the poorer classes from becoming literate and rising up. In Japanese, of course, they are called kanji (漢字, かんじ)! Both Korea and Vietnam have stopped using them in daily life, instead moving to completely phonetic alphabets. In Korean, kanji are known as hanja (한자, 漢字) and in Vietnamese, chữ Hán (?漢). In Chinese, it is 汉字, the literal meaning is "han characters" and will be pronounced like something close to hàn-jī depending on where you are. Kanji have been used by the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, but they aren't called kanji in every language. And so, katakana and hiragana were born! Are Kanji the Same in All Asian Languages? By the 8th century AD, the Japanese began to annotate the Chinese characters in order to mark pronunciation and to change them to make sense with existing Japanese grammar. Everything was written and read in Chinese. At the time kanji came to Japan, the Japanese had no written language of their own. Here are a few examples of the evolution of kanji: While kanji existed in China for many centuries, it didn't reach Japan until 57 AD and still wasn't adopted by the Japanese until the early 5th century AD. In many kanji you can still see the original picture quite easily, others, not so much. Over time, those representations evolved into the characters written today. The original kanji are meant to be pictograms, that is, they express an idea through a picture. Some believe the first writings appeared in 4500 BC, and the oldest known modern kanji is dated to 1600 BC. Kanji are believed to have originated in China, though it is not certain exactly when they were first written. A kanji can be a word all by itself, like 木 (which means tree) or a kanji can be part of another word like 木造 (which means 'wooden, or made of wood'). Kanji is a system of symbols that represent words or ideas, and that can have different meanings and pronunciations depending on their context. Both hiragana and katakana are phonetic, meaning that each character represents a single syllable, and that character will never be pronounced any other way. Kanji is one of three Japanese writing systems along with hiragana and katakana. But what IS kanji exactly? Is it Chinese? Is it Japanese? How do I pronounce kanji? How do I remember kanji? How many kanji ARE there? How many kanji do I have to learn? Why are there so many strokes? These are all excellent questions, and ones we are about to answer for you! What IS Kanji, exactly? If you're just starting to learn Japanese, congratulations! You may have already learned hiragana and katakana, and if you're reading this it means you've probably come across your first kanji. ![]() ![]() Using this newbie-friendly Twitter feed plugin, we embedded and customized WPBeginner’s live Twitter feed on WordPress in under 5 minutes!
